Yes, you can use any spool on your serger. The only thing you have to do is make sure that the thread does not catch on the edge of the spool. I use a small plastic disc on top of the spool, this allows the thread to glide smoothly .

Some people tell me you can. The difference is if you use a regular spool of thread you would use on a regular sewing machine, you will run out of thread in a very quick amount of time, like 20 minutes of sewing. The serger thread is cheaper for you to use on a serger because the serger sews so quickly, compared to the regular sewing machine. If you just want to use up your thread, go ahead though:)

Yes, it can, but only until you can purchase the serger thread. Incorrect thread can cause tension problems.

If I were you, depending on how experienced you are with your serger, I would bring it to a reputable dealer and tell them what you need to know. They could steer you in a class or at least someone's Grandma who loves to sew. I'm going to take my own advice and do that very soon. I hope that helps.

How much are you willing to spend is the key. If you have money for a higher end model or classes, I would do that. Try to make the best informed decision you can by visiting different sewing machine stores. I like Singer a lot and have used them all my life.

I don't think so. I know you need a special foot to gather for knit fabrics on a regular sewing machine. If I ever get this serger I bought figured out, I'll let you know if I get that far.

Yes, you will need a Shirring Foot in order to gather using your serger. You may purchase a Shirring Foot through the SINGER website or at several other outlets online.

By normal sewing, do you mean what a regular sewing machine does? No, it can't do that. There are machines you can buy that have a serger stitch that comes with the regular sewing machine. That one is the XL100 and it has a CD and embroiders. There are a lot of things you can do with one or the other that the opposite can't do. Good luck.

No, sergers cannot do straight stitching. Sergers are used for professional seams and clothing construction.

Question
The lower looper keeps coming unthreaded.
The whole looper remains threaded except for the last step. The thread comes out of the last hole and it causes my thread to break on the upper looper and the needle. I have checked the thread, the tension, the needle and I have cleaned it. This has become quite a problem because it won't sew for more than five inches. Any help would be appreciated.

I hear your pain, believe me. I don't have your problem, mine is the simple 3-thread hem and that's it. I will try to help you with your situation though. Have your threaded your upper or lower looper first? You have to thread the looper on the left, not all the way to the right. The upper looper (the one on the left), then the lower looper, then the needles last. Let me know if this helps.

Thank you for contacting the Singer Sewing Company. Below are threading instructions. It appears that the threading may have started wrong. If the below steps do not work, please visit our website at singerco.com to locate a service center near you.

Be sure to follow these simple steps when threading your serger.

- Make sure that the looper cover door is closed correctly; your serger will not sew if it is left open.

- Make sure that you unthread both needles when threading either the upper or lower looper, otherwise the thread will keep breaking or the looper will become unthreaded.
- You must thread the upper (orange) looper first, then the lower (yellow) looper, then the right (green) needle and then finally the left (blue) needle. It is extremely important that you follow this order when threading your serger.
- Make sure that you are using the same brand and same size spools of thread on all four spool holders. Manufacturers use different twisting methods, which will affect how your serger will stitch.
-The color black is one of the most difficult colors to work with; this is caused by the chemicals used when dying the thread. We recommend using a deep navy or a dark grey in the loopers rather than the color black, this very often will eliminate skipped stitches, or the loopers becoming unthreaded. You can use black in your needles however.
- Make sure that seam width finger is positioned at "S" for standard sewing; this is illustrated on page 57 in your manual.
- Make sure that the differential feed is positioned at 1.0; this is illustrated on page 49 of your annual.
- Make sure that the width adjustment knob is set a 4.5 if you are sewing with 4 threads, 3.5 if sewing with 3 threads, and at "R" if doing a rolled hem. This is illustrated on page 47 of your manual. The width is adjusted by turning the small dial to the right of the lower knife on the front of your serger.

We have step-by-step threading instructions on our website; please take a few minutes to review these at www.singerco.com, click on "Sewing Resources” and then “Operation Basics”. Next scroll down to the threading information for sergers.

I made one using pre-quilted fabric. I placed a thin piece of paneling covered with light fabric in the bottom for stability. I used heavy weight webbing for the carry straps. It is soft sided so you still need to use care as you carry it from place to place.
