Sergers (also known as overlock machines) do not sew buttonholes. These machines are used for seam finishes and some decorative stitching. Most sewing machines include a buttonhole stitch.

We recommend using only SINGER needles on SINGER sewing machines and sergers.

Are there special threads for this machine. The spool on the thread that I purchased fits loosly on the machine unlike the thread that was on the machine when I purchased it. Is there a special thread bobbin size that I should buy?

A spool cap can help keep the thread spool in place. Most machines come with at least one spool cap.

Here are some suggestions:

- Make sure that the looper cover door is closed correctly; your serger will not sew if it is left open.

- Make sure that you unthread both needles when threading either the upper or lower looper, otherwise the thread will keep breaking or the looper will become unthreaded.

- You must thread the upper (orange) looper first, then the lower (yellow) looper, then the right (green) needle and then finally the left (blue) needle. It is extremely important that you follow this order when threading your serger.

- Make sure that you are using the same brand and same size spools of thread on all four spool holders. Manufacturers use different twisting methods, which will affect how your serger will stitch.
The color black is one of the most difficult colors to work with; this is caused by the chemicals used when dying the thread. We recommend using a deep navy or a dark grey in the loopers rather than the color black, this very often will eliminate skipped stitches, or the loopers becoming unthreaded. You can use black in your needles however.

- Make sure that seam width finger is positioned at "S" for standard sewing; this is illustrated on page 28 in your manual.

- Make sure that the differential feed is positioned at 1.0, this is illustrated on page 24 of your manual.

- Make sure that the width adjustment knob is set a 4.5 if you are sewing with 4 threads, 3.5 if sewing with 3 threads, and at "R" if doing a rolled hem. This is illustrated on page 22 of your manual. The width is adjusted by turning the small dial to the right of the knife at the front of the serger.

We have step-by-step threading instructions on our website: http://www.singerco.com/resources/operation_basics.html

We hope the information we provided will be helpful, if your problem persists, we recommend that you take or send your machine in for service. You can find a local SINGER Service Center here: http://www.singerco.com/support/us_warranty.html
