Questions & Answers for Singer 7462 Touch & Sew

Question
I would like to buy bobbins for model 7462. What class number?
Nowhere in the manual does it specify what bobbin class number to buy for this machine. I think this is important information for someone purchasing a sewing machine. If its in there and I couldn't find it (neither could the sales clerk) then it probably needs to be more prominently placed in the booklet. thank you.

You can buy them at any store that sell thread and bobbins. The right one to buy are the plastic ones. ( The metal ones will not work in that machine. )

Sometimes dust get caught in the bobbin part. If you know how to take that part out and dust with the little brush you got with your machine. If not just take the bobbin out and blow it out with your blow dry on cool setting.

You may have accidentally lowered the buttonhole lever located just to the left of the needle bar. Make sure it is pushed all the way back up, by placing your finger under the lever and pushing up.

Also try pushing the reverse button a couple of times, this will reset the machine.

If the problem continues, pleasecontact one of the warranty centers located here: http://www.singerco.com/support/us_warranty.html

its either one of two things. Either you are threading it wrong. So thread it slowly while checking with the book. Or, the tension is to tight. On a scrap material try different stitches by putting the tension on a lower number.

It appears you are having a threading issue. See below for instructions.

First you need to make sure that you are using the original bobbins that came with your machine, your machine uses a plastic class 15J bobbin, if you want to purchase more the part number is 085128. If you have purchased additional bobbins, make sure they are the correct ones. Do NOT use pre-wound bobbins or metal bobbins; they will cause tension problems. Using the incorrect bobbin can cause the timing to be disrupted on your machine. If this is the case, the machine will need to be serviced.

The quality of the thread you use will also impact the quality of your stitching, more often than not; tension problems are often caused by poor or old dried out thread. We recommend using Coats and Clark or Gutterman thread.

Use only Singer brand needles, category 2020 for wovens and category 2045 for knits and synthetics. Using other brands such as Schmetz will cause tension problems. Using another brand of needle can also cause the timing to be disrupted.

The problem you are having may also be an indication that the upper tension disks of your machine are not threaded correctly. Here is an easy test you can perform to help you determine if your machine is threaded correctly. First raise the presser foot (UP POSITION) by turning the hand wheel TOWARDS you, never turn it away from you, you can knock the timing out when you do this. Now go ahead and thread the machine all the way to the last guide before the needle (DO NOT THREAD THE NEEDLE). (When threading this area of the machine, it helps if you hold the thread securely with your right hand just after you slip the spool of thread and spool cap on to the spool pin. Continue holding the thread until you arrive at the last thread guide before the needle). Next with the presser foot UP pull the thread towards you, there should be very little resistance. Now LOWER the presser foot, if the tension disks are threaded correctly, there should be a significant difference in the tension when you pull the thread. There should be resistance. If there was very little difference with the foot down versus the foot up, you need to repeat the threading steps. If there is a significant resistance, proceed to threading the needle. You are now ready to sew. You will find more threading information by visiting our website at www.singerco.com, and clicking on "Sewing Resources” on the toolbar and then select “Operation Basics".

If the problem persists, please take your machine in for service to your local Singer retailer. To find a retailer go to www.singerco.com, click on “Where to Buy” and then enter your zip code. If your machine is still covered by the warranty (parts and labor are covered for 1-year from date of purchase), please take or ship it to one of the warranty centers on the list we have attached. Be sure to include a copy of your receipt, the warranty center needs this to complete warranty work.

I have followed the instructions to the letter but it just keeps sewing up and down in one spot and doesn't move. I've made sure the buttonhole lever is down adn placed exactly between points A and B, I have tried changing my thread nad tension to see if that helps. I have reqound the bottom bobbin but it still just keeps sewing up and down in the same spot. Please help as i've run out of other things to try.

Here are a few more troubleshooting ideas:

1. Make sure you've selected a buttonhole stitch.
2. Make sure your buttonhole lever is not touching part A or B of the buttonhole foot.
3. Have you placed a button in the back part of the buttonhole foot in order to measure the size of the buttonhole?
4.. Press your reverse button several times as there is a slight chance it might be stuck.

If these ideas don't solve the problem, please contact Customer Service or check out our Facebook page for online help.

Make sure the bobbin winder is not engaged. Push the bobbin winder all the way to the left. If the bobbin winder is engaged, the machine will not sew.

First make sure that the buttonhole lever has been pulled down completely and that it has been positioned exactly in the center between positions A and B as shown in your manual. Be sure to follow these steps to produce your buttonhole, otherwise the machine will keep beeping:

1) Select the buttonhole stitch from your stitch panel.
2) Attach buttonhole foot to shank.
3) Place fabric under the foot. (Mark buttonhole placement on fabric, buttonhole sews out from bottom to top)
4) Align the mark on the foot with the bottom of the buttonhole marking, next lower buttonhole foot. Raise it and then lower it again. We recommend you take this extra step in case you accidentally shifted the foot when you placed the fabric under it.
5) Lower the buttonhole lever so that it sits in the center space between letters A and B. (See page 56 in your manual.)
6) Stitch out the buttonhole.
* It is important that the buttonhole foot stays level at all times, if working on a buttonhole at the top edge of a garment, it may be necessary to insert a piece of fabric at the back of the foot to keep it level.
* If the buttonhole lever touches either the front or back of the buttonhole foot the machine will beep and refuse to sew.

It is possible that the belt has slipped off. It will need checking. If the warranty is out (1year for parts and labor) you can locate a local service center to check out the problem at www.singerco.com and from the home page, click on "Where To Buy" and list the zip code. If the machine is under warranty, I can provide you a warranty center.

Thank you for contacting Singer. Make sure your machine is set for straight stitch, that your needle is in the center position and that the needle is also at the highest position. When you swing the threader towards the needle, you want to make sure that the hook inside the threader goes into the eye of the needle. Slip the thread under the hook and then pull the thread through the needle by pulling the threader away from you. When you pull the threader, the thread will form a small loop behind the needle, pull this loop using your fingers, pulling the thread under the raised presser foot and to the back of the machine.

For more information on how to use the needle threader, please go to our website at www.singerco.com. Click on "Sewing Resources" from the toolbar, and then click on "Operation Basics". You will then see a heading for the needle threader.

Sincerely,
Singer Consumer Affairs

Thank you for contacting the Singer Sewing Company.

Take the bobbin case out and see if you have lint or thread built up. Check the bobbin winder and make sure it has been pushed to the left. Make sure the button hole lever is all the way up. If all this fails, the machine should be checked. The belt on the handwheel may have slipped. If you need a list of service locations near you, please visit our website at singerco.com.

Thank You.

Only sewing machines with the Programmable Needle Up/Down button are able to set the needle to stop sewing in the down position. You will need to manually (turning the handwheel TOWARDS you) set the needle in the down position for this sewing machine.
